ABVTA's Official Statement On the Announcement of Bill 22

3/31/2026 - The Alberta Veterinary Technologist Association (ABVTA) is encouraged by the Government of Alberta’s announcement of Bill 22, which aims to modernize the Animal Protection Act for the first time in more than 20 years.

RVTs enter the profession with a deep commitment to animal care and welfare. As regulated professionals, they have a responsibility to report concerns of abuse or neglect and play an important role in supporting animals who cannot speak for themselves.

Modern, responsive legislation helps ensure that veterinary teams have the tools and framework needed to protect animals, support access to care, and respond effectively in situations of distress.

The ABVTA looks forward to reviewing the details of the proposed legislation and continuing to support efforts that strengthen animal welfare across Alberta.
