How do I become a member of the ABVTA?

To become an ABVTA member, you must be enrolled in or have graduated from a CVMA- or AVMA-accredited animal health or veterinary technology program in Alberta. Students are required to hold an ABVTA Student Membership while enrolled. After graduation, those who successfully complete the Veterinary Technician National Examination (VTNE) must apply for registration with the ABVMA and membership with the ABVTA to obtain the RVT designation.

I’m coming from another province. How do I transfer my membership?

If you are an RVT moving to Alberta, you will need to contact both your current provincial regulatory association and the Alberta Veterinary Medical Association (ABVMA) to confirm the process for transferring your registration.

Do I need to apply separately to the ABVTA and ABVMA?

No. Membership with both associations is completed at the same time through the ABVMA website.

Who do I contact if I have questions about my membership or registration?

Can student members access the same benefits as registered members?

Some benefits are available to all members, while others are exclusive to registered members. Details on eligibility are available in the Member Benefits tab on the ABVTA Website or ABVTA Member Portal (login required).

Are there fees associated with ABVTA membership?

Yes. Membership fees are paid annually through the ABVMA, with renewals completed each December as part of the registration process. You can find more information on membership fees here.

I’m a new graduate. When should I apply for membership?

It’s recommended that new graduates apply as soon as they have successfully completed their program and are preparing to write or have written the VTNE.

How do I update my membership information (such as my name or contact details)?

Log in to the ABVTA Member Portal and go to My Account to update your information. If you notice an error in membership details that you cannot edit, email membership@abvta.com.

Can I cancel my membership or change my status from practicing to non-practicing?

Yes. Please contact membership@abvta.com and we’ll help you update your status.
