How To Get Involved 

• Bring diverse industry experience including companion animal, general practice, lab, research, and public health 
• Are located in southern, northwestern, northeastern, or Indigenous communities across Alberta 

• Have at least 1 year experience in the veterinary profession 

• Are collaborative who are willing to share their perspective, ask questions, and contribute to meaningful discussions 

• Have a passion for volunteerism, advocacy, community involvement, or professional engagement 

• Are open to stepping into leadership roles  

• Enjoy connecting with fellow RVTs and publicly promoting the value, impact, and work of the ABVTA 
  
  

*No two RVT careers look exactly the same, and that’s why diverse perspectives matter. Each year, we assess the skills, experience, and representation on our Board to help ensure our leadership reflects the many practice areas, communities, and experiences that make up our profession across Alberta. *

You don’t need to check every box. We’re looking for curious, engaged members who are excited to contribute and grow. Some of the skills and qualities that strengthen our Board include: 

• Financial literacy (a strong asset) and organizational awareness 

• Governance knowledge, or an interest in learning more 

• Strategic thinking and critical analysis 

• The ability to see both the big picture and the practical realities 

• A willingness to listen to different perspectives and learn from others 

• Collaborative decision making and respectful discussion 

Ready to put your name forward? Here’s what to do:

1. Complete the application form in the ABVTA Member Portal.
   
2. Submit a letter of intent (written or video, your choice) to info@abvta.com

Your letter or video should answer:

• Why are you interested in joining the ABVTA Board of Directors? 
• A brief description of your journey as an RVT, including how long you’ve been an RVT for, been practicing in Alberta for, and what you do today
• Your professional experiences, including any leadership, governance, or finance experience 
• The unique strengths, skills and perspectives you bring 
• Volunteer, committee, mentorship, or community involvement that has helped shape who you are as a leader 
• A challenge or opportunity facing RVTs today and your thoughts on how ABVTA can support the profession 
• Why you would be a great addition to the ABVTA Board of Directors 
• If you were an animal, what animal best represents your leadership style and why? (We love a fun question!)

• July 31: Applications close 
• August 4-14: Initial review of applications by the working group 
• August 17-28: Virtual interviews with the Executive Director 
• August 31-September 18: Secondary review of applications and interviews by the working group to select final candidates to present to the Board of Directors 
• September 18: The Board of Directors finalizes and confirms the eligible candidates 

If there are more eligible candidates than open positions, an election will take place prior to the AGM on November 28, 2026.

All applicants will be notified of the results in late September, before the AGM. 

Selected applicants will:

• Attend virtual onboarding and training in October/November. 
• Join us in person for the Board retreat and AGM on November 26-28, 2026 
• Commit to a two-year term on the Board of Directors 
• Attend 4-6 Board meetings throughout the year, which can be joined virtually or in person 
• Join at least one Board committee or working group, which typically meets monthly (virtually) 
• Be prepared for some travel, depending on your role and event participation (all travel expenses are reimbursed according to the ABVTA Expense Claim Policy, and the ABVTA office can assist with arrangements) 
  

• Amplify your voice in the profession
  
• Shape important decisions that impact RVTs across Alberta
  
• Grow your leadership skills and network
  
• Have fun, connect, and represent your peers
