Royal Canin Presents Royal Chat for RVTs: The Science of Nourishment: A Full-Day Virtual Nutrition Conference

The ABVTA, together with the BCVTA, is pleased to present Royal Chat for RVTs: The Science of Nourishment, presented by Royal Canin. 

This full day of virtual learning will explore the important role nutrition plays in patient health. Through expert-led sessions, you'll learn about nutrition across all life stages, gastrointestinal health, weight management, client communication, practical nutrition tools, and more, while gaining valuable insights you can apply in practice every day.

Participant Information

Participants are welcome to attend the sessions most relevant to their interests and may come and go throughout the day as their schedules allow.

To receive a CPD certificate, please enter your first and last name, followed by your association in the Zoom chat at any point during the event for attendance purposes. For example: Jane Smith, ABVTA. You only need to do this once.

The Zoom link included in your registration confirmation will remain the same throughout the day, allowing you to leave and rejoin the event as needed.

This session is approved for 4 hours of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) credit for RVTs by the ABVMA.

Starting out right - Feeding Growing Kittens 

Time: 11:00 AM - 11:30 PM MDT (10:00 AM - 10:30 AM PT)

Speaker: Cynthia Mercier, RVT, CCRP

In this session we will review the specific needs, and interesting facts about growing kittens to help facilitate better client nutrition recommendations. Growth charting will be introduce to help ensure kittens stay lean as they mature. 


Triaging GI Nutrition & Using Biotics

Time: 11:30 AM-12:00 PM MDT (10:30 AM - 11:00 AM PT)

Speaker: Robin Saar MSc., RVT, VTS (Nutrition)

RVTs obtain patient symptoms and nutrition histories every day. This information can help determine what diagnostics a DVM may want to complete and they can help us determine which diet might offer the best support. Triaging gastrointestinal symptoms can help determine which gastrointestinal diet offers the best nutrient formulation - lower fat, higher fibre, lower carbohydrates - to help patient's recover faster. This session will review triaging techniques along with understanding the purpose of biotics in GI conditions. 


Getting Cats Active - Working our Way out of Obesity

Time: 12:00 PM - 1:15 PM MDT (11:00 AM - 12:15 PM PT)

Speaker: Cynthia Mercier, RVT, CCRP

Weight loss should be as simple as cutting back calories and seeing the numbers go down; the reality is, we need to consider a different approach to weight loss. This session will review best practices for weight loss in cats including some tips to improve movement and quality of life. Common comorbidities (diabetes, and osteoarthritis) will also be considered as part of the health plan in this session.

Vintage Cat Care 

Time: 1:45 PM - 2:30 PM MDT  (12:45 PM - 1:30 PM PT)

Speaker: Mandy Emery RVT

Senior Cats Reflect How We All See Cats they are individuals with individual needs. RVTs have a key role in helping pet owners keep aging cats healthy while preventing or managing age related health conditions. Reviewing the individual needs of senior cats and the potential health risks that come with aging felines, this session will look at key nutrients that can prolong life in feline patients.

Time: 2:40 PM - 3:10 PM MDT (1:40 PM - 2:10 PM PT)

Take a Tour with Royal Canin - Join a virtual plant tour of the Royal Canin plant in Ontario, Canada. Mandy Emery RVT will walk you through a virtual tour of our facility to show you how Royal Canin is dedicated to making a better life for pets. 


You Don't Have to Memorize This - Reviewing Nutrition Tools

Time: 3:15 PM - 4:25 PM MDT (2:15 PM - 3:25 PM PT)

Speaker: Lisa Doetze RVT

Nutrition tools exist and are here to help make nutrition decisions. This session will highlight some of the amazing AI tools that are at your fingertips including choosing a diet for your patient, determining feeding amounts, and setting up a weight loss plan. 


I Keep Putting My Foot In It - Providing Effective Nutrition Recommendations 

Time: 4:30 PM - 5:00 PM MT (3:30 PM - 4:00 PM PT)

Speaker: Robin Saar MSc., RVT, VTS (Nutrition)

This session will look at some key ways to start communicating effectively with clients to provide recommendation and information to clients.
