Speaker:

Tammy Johnston, B.A., B.Ed, MEd

Tammy completed a Bachelor of Education and Bachelor of Arts (English/Psychology) at the University of Winnipeg and a Master of Education through Athabasca University. In 1988, she started as a music teacher in Winnipeg. She moved with her family to Calgary in 1994, and later began working with a homeschooling/online program through ECASSRD. She has worked at other schools along her path. This has included preschool, various grade levels, areas of curriculum, as well as adult learners at Columbia College.

Tammy has worked with Indigenous students since the beginning of her career. A contract through Ignite e-Learning and KTCEA to write a season-based, Indigenous ways of knowing curriculum for their community, led her to focus on Indigenous education. Currently, Tammy is employed as an Indigenous Student Success Learning Leader at Calgary Board of Education in an elementary school.

Tammy is Red River Metis and her family has a rich history in the Metis Nation.  Her great-grandfather, James Mowat, has a school and park named after him in Fort Saskatchewan and a street in Edmonton (misspelled as Mowatt) and her great-great grandfather Thomas Bunn, served on Louis Riel’s council. She practices traditional Cree spirituality and has been learning Plains Cree for the last three years.
