Course Overview
MHFA Certification is an evidence-based certification course that teaches participants how to recognize signs of mental health problems or crises, provide initial support, and guide individuals toward appropriate professional help. This program builds strong, practical helping skills that can be applied in workplaces, schools, homes, and community settings.
What You’ll Learn
Participants will learn to:
-
Understand the impact of mental health problems and crises
-
Recognize signs and symptoms of common mental health concerns
-
Use the MHFA Action Framework to provide effective, supportive responses
-
Approach and speak with someone who may be struggling
-
Increase confidence responding to crises (e.g., panic attacks, suicidal thoughts, substance use concerns)
-
Support their own well-being while helping others
Having at least one veterinary team member within each workplace trained in Mental Health First Aid is critical to:
- Reduce the stigma that often surrounds mental health, which can prevent veterinary professionals from seeking help
- Create a more open and supportive workplace culture, encouraging people to talk more freely about their mental health without fear of judgment
- Ensure there is someone available to offer immediate, informed support and connect individuals to appropriate resources when needed. This proactive approach not only supports the well-being of the team but also helps build a healthier, more resilient workplace
The Mental Health First Aid Course has a capacity limit of 15 participants.
