Animal Welfare Symposium: Improving Communities Through One Health

Date: September 10 & 11, 2026
Location: Calgary, AB

The  Alberta Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Alberta SPCA) is proud to host the 2026 Animal Welfare Symposium, presented by Vétérinov. This full-day event brings together professionals and advocates to explore the root causes of animal welfare challenges and improve communities across the province.

Sessions include:

  • Dr. Jordan Woodsworth, WCVM (Keynote) - From Siloed Response to Shared Responsibility: A Vision for a Functioning One Health/One Welfare System
  • Sally Johnston, Calgary Humane Society - The One Welfare Blueprint: Data-Driven Community Services That Work
  • Kim Blomme & Carly Lynch, WILDNorth - 14,000 Calls for Help: What the Public Can Tell Us About Wildlife Welfare
  • Charlotte Wasylik, Chatsworth Farm - Livestock Welfare in the Public Eye: Balancing Animal Care, Wildlife, and Public Expectations
  • Dr. Robyn Jaynes & Marieke van der Velden, PetSmart Charities of Canada - The Veterinarian Perspective: New Data on Access to Care in Canada
  • Animal Hoarding: A Cross-Sector Conversation
  • And more!


The following day, September 11, PetSmart Charities is hosting the Connecting Pets and People Summit at the same venue. This free event is designed for shelter and animal rescue staff and volunteers, with a focus on best practices in sheltering and reducing barriers to pet adoption.

Together, these events offer two full days of learning, collaboration, and networking in animal welfare.

Attendees can purchase tickets for the Animal Welfare Symposium and register for the free Connecting Pets and People Summit through our online registration portal.
