RVT Month – 2023
Every October, the Alberta Veterinary Technologist Association (ABVTA) celebrates the integral work that veterinary technologists do each and every day through RVT Month.
Registered Veterinary Technologists (RVTs) are essential veterinary professionals who work with other veterinary team members in several areas of the veterinary industry. RVTs play a major role in contributing to not only protecting the health and safety of animals, but to all Canadians as well through knowledge of animal and public health, biosecurity and infectious disease control. RVTs serve as an integral part of the health of Canadians by contributing to the safety and supply of the food chain. In addition, RVTs also play a vital role in ensuring the wellbeing of Canadians by ensuring their furry, feathered and scaled companions are kept happy and healthy.
The ABVTA was founded to support and empower a knowledgeable network of Registered Veterinary Technologists to advance our profession while providing compassionate veterinary care. Our collective voice is the voice of RVTs across Alberta. We are a strong association of individuals, driving the profession of veterinary technology and placing an emphasis on professional development and advancement.
We sincerely hope everyone will take part in this special month by advocating for and recognizing the vital role that Registered Veterinary Technologists make in their respective communities.
2023 is the 7th consecutive year celebrating RVT Month. Celebrating over 2500 RVTs and animal health technology students throughout Alberta, the ABVTA has planned several events throughout October.

RVTs Unleashed – A Province-Wide Social Spectacle!

Join us for an exciting social night as we celebrate RVT Month in Alberta! RVTs Unleashed is a province-wide social spectacle that encourages veterinary teams and colleagues to come together and celebrate their contributions in their own unique way. This event is all about honoring the hard work, dedication, and camaraderie of RVTs across the province.
To participate, veterinary teams are invited to organize a social activity of their choice within their location or area. Whether it’s a pizza party, paint night, bike ride, or any other fun gathering, we want our members to be creative and celebrate each other in their own style.
We encourage all participating groups to share their activities and photos of their celebrations for a chance to win exciting prizes! The awards include categories such as The Pawsome Party Award, The Masterpiece Award, The Wheels of Fun Award, The Tasty Treats Award, The Outfit of the Night Award and more! Additionally, we have The Community Champions Award for the group that contributes the most to their local community during their chosen social activity, such as organizing a charity event or volunteering.

Alberta Landmark Light-ups
October 20-25, 2023 – Saamis Tepee, Medicine Hat, AB
The Saamis Tepee in Medicine Hat is the worlds tallest tepee, situated in the Seven Persons coulee, which is an important archaeological site in the Northern Plains. The City of Medicine Hat will be lighting up the Tepee in ABVTA colours to increase community awareness of the important work of RVTs in their communities. The Tepee will be lit from dusk on October 20, 2023 to dawn on October 25, 2023.
October 21, 2023 – Grande Prairie Sundial
We are excited to announce The City of Grande Prairie will be recognizing RVT Month on October 21, 2023 by lighting the iconic Sundial up in ABVTA colours. The sundial is located at Centre 2000 and will be lit from dusk to dawn daily, throughout the week.
October 21, 2023 – Beaverlodge Giant Beaver
The town of Beaverlodge will be showing support and recognition on October 21, 2023 by lighting up the giant beaver. The beaver is located on 506 5 Avenue in Beaverlodge, Alberta.
October 21 – 23, 2023 – Sylvan Lake Lighthouse
The town of Sylvan Lake will be showing support and recognition from October 21 – 23, 2023 by lighting up the iconic Lighthouse. The Lighthouse is located on Lakeshore Dr, Sylvan Lake, AB.
October 28, 2023 – Edmonton High Level Bridge
Once again, the City of Edmonton will be lighting up the High Level Bridge, a historical Edmonton landmark, in ABVTA colours to celebrate the essential work of Alberta’s RVTs! The bridge will be lit from dusk to dawn, October 28, 2023.
