
Become a Leader: Apply to Join the ABVTA Board of Directors!
Are you passionate about shaping the future of the veterinary profession? Do you have a unique perspective, a big heart for the RVT community, and a drive to make a difference? Then we want you on our team!
Applications are open from July 21 to September 4, 2026.
Who Can Apply?
If you’re an ABVTA Registered Member in good standing, you’re eligible and encouraged to apply!
We’re especially looking for members who:
- Bring diverse professional experience including those from large animal, lab, research, hospital management and industry/sales (pet insurance, pharmaceuticals, pet food, etc.
- Represent rural and Indigenous communities, particularly from southern and northern Alberta
- Have at least 3 years of hands-on professional experience
- Are team players who aren’t afraid to ask tough questions and share their voice
- Have past volunteer, advocacy, or community service experience (big bonus!)
- Are open to stepping into leadership roles like Chair or Vice Chair in the future
- Are willing to attend events such as CanWest, connect with members, and proudly represent ABVTA
Desired Skillsets & Superpowers
We’re looking for people who have or are excited to learn:
- Financial literacy (a strong asset)
- A good understanding of governance or a willingness to dive in and learn
- Strategic thinking and critical analysis skills
- The ability to balance big-picture vision with real-world action
Application Requirements
Ready to put your name forward? Here’s what to do:
- Complete the application form in the ABVTA Member Portal.
- Submit a letter of intent (written or video, your choice) uploaded with your form or emailed after submitting.

Your letter or video should answer:
- Why are you interested in joining the ABVTA Board of Directors?
- Tell us about your work experience, including any finance or stakeholder relations experience
- What is your RVT superpower?
- Share any volunteer experience and the skills you gained that could benefit the Board
- What do you think is the biggest challenge in the veterinary industry today?
- Having worked in the industry, what animal would you never own and why? (We love a fun question!)
What Happens Next?
- September 4: Applications close
- September 5 – 19: Initial review of applications by the working group
- September 20 – October 4: Virtual interviews with the Executive Director
- October 6 to 10: Secondary review of applications and interviews by the working group to select final candidates to present to the Board of Directors
- October: The Board of Directors finalizes and confirms the eligible candidates
If there are more eligible candidates than open positions, an election will take place prior to the AGM. All applicants will be notified of the results before the AGM.
Get Ready to Dive In
Selected applicants will:
- Attend virtual onboarding and training in mid-November
- Join us in person for the Board retreat and AGM on November 28 and 29, 2025
- Commit to a two-year term on the Board of Directors
- Attend Board meetings held every 6 to 8 weeks, which can be joined virtually or in person (generally in Edmonton, Calgary, or Banff)
- Join at least one Board committee or working group, which typically meets monthly (virtually)
- Be prepared for some travel, depending on your role and event participation (all travel expenses are reimbursed according to the ABVTA Expense Claim Policy, and the ABVTA office can assist with arrangements)
