We are thrilled to introduce Rennay Halbert as a n We are thrilled to introduce Rennay Halbert as a new member of the ABVTA Board of Directors! 🎉

Rennay Halbert graduated from NAIT’s Animal Health Technology program in 2017 and has since dedicated herself to exotic animal medicine. She thrives on the challenge of working with a wide variety of species, from rabbits to reptiles, and constantly seeks to expand her skills to ensure every animal receives the highest standard of care, regardless of size.

Rennay joined the ABVTA Board of Directors to contribute to the growth and recognition of the RVT profession within veterinary medicine. She strongly connects with the association’s mission and vision and is passionate about empowering RVTs to fully realize their potential, advocate for their roles, and foster a safe and supportive environment within the profession. Outside of her work, Rennay enjoys traveling, playing soccer, and dedicating time to self-care.

🌟 We are excited to announce ABVTA Member Smoke 🌟 We are excited to announce ABVTA Member Smokey Walters as the recipient of the 2024 ABVTA Meritorious Service Award! 🌟 This prestigious award is presented to an ABVTA or ABVMA member who has demonstrated outstanding service to the ABVTA. It recognizes individuals who actively promote the role of the veterinary technologist within the profession, to the public, and across the veterinary industry.

💫 Criteria for the Award:
✅ Demonstrates excellence in all aspects of their field.
✅ Conducts themselves in a professional manner.
✅ Shows dedication to the humane treatment of animals.
✅ Contributes to the profession through participation with the ABVTA Board, committees, or activities.

Smokey learned early on the positive impact of volunteering, inspired by the support she received from her own community. After graduating from NAIT’s Animal Health Technology program in 1997, Smokey began volunteering with the AAAHT (now ABVTA), serving on the continuing education committee and as the newsletter editor, before joining the ABVMA’s PIPS and Wellness Committees.

Throughout her 12 years in veterinary practice, Smokey has worked in small, exotic, and mixed animal practice before becoming Executive Assistant for the Edmonton Association of Small Animal Veterinarians (EASAV). There, she founded the Dr. Milton Ness Memorial Teddy Bear Hospital, the Pet Body Donation Program, and the EASAV Peer Support Group. Currently, Smokey works as a Practice Inspector for the ABVMA and an RVT at Blue Cross Animal Hospital.

Smokey Walters is a shining example of what it means to lead with heart, passion, and purpose. Through her work, she’s not only made a difference in the lives of animals and her community, but she’s also helped shape a stronger future for RVTs everywhere. 💚

Let’s give a big round of applause to Smokey for this incredible recognition! 👏🎉
